File compression utilities are general good for text related files, such as txt, doc, xls, html, php…
Winrar & 7zip are the one I like and recommend the most.

However, most media type of files (such as mp3, avi, mp4, jpg…) are already in compressed format.
Using file compressing utilities are generally wasting the effort.
Since the hard disk storage price is so affordable, compressing or converting the audio to squeeze 15-20% makes no sense.

In case you still want more space to trade off the convenience you already enjoy, here is a comparison of different audio format in turn of performance and compression ratio.

Summary:
1. 7zip, winrar, etc won’t make any significant different on media files
2. Converting a media file is the most popular way to minimize a media file

Custom firmware can unlock many features that a typical router is capable of.
The majority of low end routers lack the following functions, such as QoS, wireless bridge, advance bandwidth monitoring etc.

There are two main alternative firmwares to choose from; DD-WRT and Tomato.

In order to take advantages of the custom firmware and added features, check the compatible list to find out whether the existing router is compatible with the firmware.
Read the flashing process and proceed closely to the instruction. Failure to comply with the instruction may result an unusable router.

Free Anti-virus Softwares –

Review Among free anti-virus software offerings, I like Avast Home Edition and AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition.

Both offerings are absolutely free and are compatible to Microsoft Windows 7.

AVG used to be very fast in version 7.5. However, since v.8, AVG is slowing down our test platform.
If AVG is chosen, disable/unselect the AVG toolbar during installation which may speed thing a little faster.

Avast is basically maintain free and fast. The only downsize is that Avast requires registration. Home user is required to visit Avast web site and obtain a license code for free. This license code grant the home user one year free license for using the free edition.

In summary, Avast is better and faster. Unless the end user don’t like to go extra step to obtain a free license from Avast, AVG will be a better choice.

Performance:

1) Hardware

a) Memory -
Most of the stock netbook comes with 1 GB of memory and all of them can be replaced by a piece of 2GB memory.
(standard DDR2 6400 SO-DIMM is compatible to most netbooks)

b) Flash Memory -
In Microsoft Windows 7, there is a feature called “ReadyBoost” which allows a flash memory to be used as a standard RAM.

2) Software

a) Ramdisk
Ramdisk is a software which enables a system to use a set amount of memory to act as a hard disk drive.
To take advantage of it, create 512MB or 256MB ramdisk and allow the followings point to the new ramdisk.
